Join us for the first installment of TokyoDev Talks, where we will have presentations that cut across the stack from engineers working at some of the most interesting tech companies in Japan.

Agenda

18:30 〜 19:00 Doors open

Enjoy talking with the other participants before the presentations begin.

19:00 〜 19:05 Opening - Paul McMahon (TokyoDev)

We'll kick things off by welcoming everyone and giving a short introduction of the event.

19:05 〜 19:25 Refactoring Reality: A Monorepo Migration Adventure - Robert Wawrzyniak (Shippio)

This presentation will explore how Shippio's history guided our decision to adopt a monorepo. It will provide an overview of our technology, the choices we made, and the trade-offs we faced. We'll also share key moments—both the highs and lows—from our migration and discuss how it impacted our workflow.

About Robert

As a Staff Engineer and Senior IT Architect with over 15 years of experience, I specialize in digital strategy, product development, and full-stack software engineering. My diverse roles, including Product Manager, Team Lead, Strategy Consultant, and Architect, have equipped me with a broad skill set. I focus on the travel & transport sector and e-commerce, leading innovative solutions and technological advancements. Committed to growth and empowerment, I mentor upcoming talent and develop tools to solve complex challenges and inspire others. I strive to balance business objectives with technological innovation in IT architecture.

About Shippio

Shippio is Japan's first digital freight forwarder, building a multi-faceted digital platform that allows both customers (importer/exporter) and operators to efficiently and fluidly process international trade workflows.

19:25 〜 19:45 The Need for Accessible UX & Design - Rob Keleher (HENNGE)

As both users and creators of digital interfaces in our everyday lives, it can be easy to think we know best about what users need and want out of our own products. But how well do you really know your users and their particular needs, which could be different than your own?

In this talk, I highlight how small but intentional effort by designers and developers can make a large difference to users that many may not think of first — those with disabilities. Using real-world examples, I aim to showcase how smart accessible designs can provide assistive functionality that goes unnoticed by most but is essential to those who need it.

If you’re a keen-eyed coder looking to work in a welcoming, international environment in Shibuya, come speak to him later!

About HENNGE
